The cases that swung the 2021 election and set the Six Nations up for dominance

Juror Selection

Kim Potter was chosen by the jury as the forewoman and not the sole female juror. Some female candidates were disqualified, including the two women who were chosen as alternates.

Deliberations

Potter, by her own admission, was unsentimental towards the defendant, Andrew Ko, who she said would go on trial again at a later date for illegally purchasing an assault rifle. In a tweet on 2 May she wrote: “The guy is already serving two life sentences. The judge has decided to keep him behind bars till trial later.”

The court found that Ko had misused firearms, explosives and chemicals in the manufacture of illegal ammunition. A judge issued three firearm and explosives prevention orders banning Ko from any activity connected to firearms and explosives.

Hearing Rigid Scrutiny

The Ministry of Justice website states that “everyone who comes before the court is subjected to rigorous scrutiny for any evidence, witnesses or evidence of influence by any judicial official”.

If a person has an incentive or a desire to influence a court proceedings, they face imprisonment of up to 10 years.
